Triad Theory of Treating the Roots
The Roots in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) refer to both the core causes of illness and the foundations of health. To treat the roots of every physical illness involves three principles:
1) Direct natural healing agents already in the body to locations where they are most useful.
2) Supplement these healing agents if they are deficient or missing.
3) Aid in the elimination of pathogenic influences if these healing agents are incapable of doing so.
Every physical illness therefore has between one and three causes:
1) Stagnation: All the healing agents necessary for optimal health are already in the body but they are misappropriated.
Treatment: Acupuncture and manual therapy are ideal to open blockages and facilitate the movement of healing factors to optimal locations.
2) Deficiency: The body’s natural capacity to restore health is insufficient.
Treatment: Herbs, nutrition, and appropriate lifestyle modifications/enhancements are necessary to supplement the quantity and quality of the insufficient healing factors.
3) Excess: Pathogenic factors in the body are too strong for the body to regulate.
Treatment: Herbs, acupuncture, and manual therapy will eliminate these pathogenic factors without harming the body in the process.
There are of course other treatment techniques available in the numerous theories on medicine and health that address these three factors but these represent the core techniques utilized at Roots of Eastern Medicine to restore optimal health. Any treatment which falls into one of the triad of principles can be considered a root treatment. Anything that does not fall into one of these three categories can at most be called palliative care, and cannot be labeled corrective.
